Podcasts

I’ve been following a very good podcast Gimlet media called Reply All.

Reply All is a great podcast about “The Internet”. It explores the changing lives of people as a result of the internet. They have also explored some of the strange wrinkles in culture that result from the information available on the Internet.

Systems under investigation change

They recently did a two part Podcast that really struck a chord for me.

The Crime Machine series is a compelling story about improving the lives of many real people through the vision of a person that sees things differently that most. He is able to make a large positive difference through tenacity, data and visualization. In this case those people living in New York City and other large cities.

Using newly discovered metrics derived from data can lead to discoveries and improvements. However it is also important to understand the metrics and realize that by acting to improve metrics will change the system under investigation.

This series documents this result very well. In this case it’s a human process with human consequences. Thinking about this in the context of data science gives me a good example to share with others about the reoccurring need to re-train systems and dig deeper than metrics to understand the system and how it changes over time.

Take a listen, and share your thoughts.
